There are two issues. One, when the transfer belt needs to be replaced (107,000 pages continuous monochrome or 33,000 continuous color paper, or 44,0000 intermittent monochrome or 23,000 intermittittent color pages) according to the Installation Guide. When this happens you either have to buy a new or refurbished transfer belt, or but a replacement counter board - its basicaly a little IC board with a resistor or something on it. I found a guy who sell these for $45 U.S. It was very easy to replace.
The other time is when the window on the transfer belt gets dirty from toner dust - It is a clear window in the shape of a D on the edge of the mylar transfer belt. Rotate it until you see it. You can clean it with alcohol. It must be transparent. You can also clean the sensor by unsrewing one screw and cleaning the sensor with alcohol. If this doesn't work, just get a single hole puncher and punch out the clear window. I just did this and it is back and working. A guy at the a Minolta repair place suggested this to me. Hope this helps. If you want to order the replacment counter, let me know.
